Members of the Sacramento Chess Club held a Chess Festival on Saturday April 25, 2009 in Fremont Park. There were lessons, a simultaneous exhibition, and quad competition. Families and friends came out to enjoy the sun and play chess in the park. Special thanks goes out to the United States Coast Guard for providing tables and chairs for the event!

Fremont Park Farmers Market starts back up on May 5th!
Come on out and get fresh and local produce!
Certified Farmers’ Markets are an effort to reestablish the traditional link between farmers and consumers in California. Certified Farmers’ Markets are “the real thing;” places where genuine farmers offer only agricultural products they grow themselves for direct sale to the public. By eliminating the middleman’s additional costs and multiple product handling, both the farmers and the consumers benefit.
Although the Certified Farmers’ Markets are strictly governed by the high quality and growing standards of California, their farmers can bring field and tree ripened fruits and vegetables which are too delicate for the packing and shipping processes of traditional food distribution systems. In addition, consumers are assured of obtaining only California grown fruits and vegetables, fresh and in season, at attractive prices.
California farmers are the most regulated farmers in the world, but high standards add to the cost of farming and put our farmers at a competitive disadvantage with produce shipped from other areas. By shopping at Certified Farmers’ Markets, consumers directly support our responsible California family farmers, help save our vanishing farmland and maintain a safe food supply in the state where they raise their families.
Certified Farmers’ Markets have become social gathering places and are the face of the communities they serve. They are where the agrarian community and the urban community relate to each other. The markets serve as great communication vehicles whereby patrons come face to face with their food source, enjoy the enlightenment of a multicultural experience and learn from the exchange of information

Another free pickup game of CTF this coming Tuesday night! Bring your friends and share the love.
We had about 30 people come out last time. Come help us try things out for the league! Wear your XOSO shirts if you’ve got one.
We’ll be at Fremont Park (between 15th and 16th Streets and between Q and P Streets). We’ll play until 8ish or it’s dark. Meet us at the fountain in the middle wearing your Xoso shirt if you have one!
You remember the game: two teams, each with a flag and a jail. You have to sneak across the field, past the neutral zone to capture their flag, all while evading the other team. If they tag you on their side of the field, you go to their jail where you will be guarded vigilantly. Never fear, your team can spring you from the slammer by tagging you before they themselves are captured.
This is a free Xoso Sports event. Invite your friends! If you have a XOSO SHIRT please wear it to this event. We’ll head over to Hot Italian for a little drinking and socializing after the game.

Dear Friend of the Arts,
This year marks the Sacramento Poetry Center’s 30th anniversary. We would like to hold a celebration for all of our contributors over the years, and do something to help launch a new generation of writers and artists.
We invite you to participate in a day-long Multicultural Children’s Literary Arts Festival to be held at Fremont Park (15th and P Streets) on Saturday, May 16, 2009. This event will combine performances, exhibits and interactive activities for children. We are offering each participant (organization, individual or business) FREE exhibit space for the day and invite you to create at least one interactive activity for children for your space. We will also have several areas for ongoing performances throughout the day.
If you would like to participate, please register online at http://www.mccaf.net by Friday, March 13, 2009.
This event will be at no cost to you and will give you an opportunity to highlight your group’s activities and share them with the community. We are hoping that this event will introduce children and their families to many of Sacramento’s regional arts groups and give us the chance to celebrate art together.
Thank you for your support,
The Sacramento Poetry Center
& Friends of Fremont Park
